FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

TASSMAN PHYSICAL MODELING PLUG-IN ANNOUNCED FOR MOTU DIGITAL PERFORMER

APPLIED ACOUSTIC SYSTEMS ANNOUNCES MAS VERSION OF TASSMAN AND LOUNGE LIZARD

ANAHEIM, CA - NAMM CONVENTION, January 17, 2002 - Applied Acoustic Systems, Inc., a leading developer of virtual instrument plug-in products, announced today that it will soon ship a MAS (MOTU Audio System) version of the Tassman, their powerful modular physical modeling plug-in.

Applied Acoustic Systems Inc., a leading developer of virtual instrument plug-in products, announced today that it will soon add MAS (MOTU Audio System) support to its line of products based on physical modeling technology, including the Tassman, a powerful modular software synthesizer, and the Lounge Lizard EP-1 electric piano.

Physical Modeling is a uniquely powerful synthesis technique, which uses the laws of physics to reproduce the behavior of an object. In other words the Tassman solves, in real time, mathematical equations describing how an object functions. It uses no sampling; instead, it simply calculates the sound as you play in accordance to the controls it receives.

For example, different sounds will be made by a plate of a given geometry and material, depending on the strength of the mallet impact and its impact point. It will behave differently again if you hit the plate when it is at rest or when it is already vibrating. Physical modeling takes all these parameters into account naturally since it reproduces the behavior of the real object. This results in very natural and realistic sounds and reproduces the control you would expect from real acoustic instruments, as well as the warmth of real analog circuits.

The Tassman can essentially be seen as two tightly integrated applications; the builder, and the player. As the name implies, the builder allows you to create your own synths and instruments, or customize any of the over 100 pre-patched constructions to suit your needs. The library of of modules contains all of the building blocks found in traditional analog synthesizers including VCOs, filters, envelopes, and effects, as well as the acoustic models of strings, mallets, drum membranes, and more.

The Lounge Lizard is an electric piano based on physical modeling. All mechanisms used in its hardware equivalents are precisely replicated including the hammer, tone bar, tine, and pick up. The sound is calculated in real time in accordance with the controls the program receives. The resulting sound is unmatched in it's realism and warmth. The Lounge Lizard EP-1 comes with presets modeled after the classic electric piano sounds, but users can also modify the existing sounds to create their own signature tones, saving them as user presets for instant recall.
