Jordan effectively key switches between koto and liu qin harmonics, tremolo and sustain presets at the beginning to add authentic expression to his performance. Then he layers them with the bell-like Bian Qing and pipa for further effect. That scratchy, bowed-string sound you hear in the latter half of this video is the er hu. The er hu presets include effects like this one, along with convention bowing and playing techniques.
