How to update the firmware on your MOTU hardware


This document contains instructions for updating the firmware on your MOTU audio interface.

To confirm the firmware version currently installed on your unit, look at the bottom of your device's tab in the MOTU Audio Setup/Console application (most FireWire/USB devices), on the Setup page of the MOTU Video Setup for our video devices, or in the CueMix application (select "Setup" under the Devices drop-down menu) for the MicroBook II.

Firmware Installation


Be aware of the orientation of the FireWire or USB plug when connecting it to the device. Make sure that the curved part of the plug is aligned with the curved part of the port. Forcing the plug into the port the wrong way can permanently damage the interface.


4pre

  1. Turn off the 4pre.
  2. Disconnect the FireWire cable from back panel if it is connected.
  3. Connect the 4pre to the computer via USB.
  4. Press and hold the Mic 1 knob on the front panel and turn on the 4pre.
  5. Release the Mic 1 knob when the word UP appears on the front panel LED's.
  6. Open the firmware updater program and follow the on-screen instructions to install the update.


MicroBook II

  1. Disconnect the USB cable from back panel to turn off the MicroBook II.
  2. Press and hold the volume knob on the top panel and connect the MicroBook II to the computer by USB.
  3. Release the volume knob when the "MIC" and "GTR" LED's start to flash on the top panel.
  4. Open the firmware updater program and follow the on-screen instructions to install the update.


Track16

  1. Turn off the Track16.
  2. Disconnect the FireWire cable from back panel if it is connected.
  3. Connect the Track16 to the computer via USB.
  4. Press and hold the volume knob on the top panel and turn on the Track16.
  5. Release the volume knob when the letter B appears on the top panel LED's.
  6. Open the firmware updater program and follow the on-screen instructions to install the update.


Audio Express

  1. Turn off the Audio Express.
  2. Disconnect the FireWire cable from back panel if it is connected.
  3. Connect the Audio Express to the computer via USB.
  4. Press and hold the Mic 1 knob on the front panel, and turn on the Audio Express.
  5. Release the Mic 1 knob when the word UP appears on the front panel LED's.
  6. Open the firmware updater program and follow the on-screen instructions to install the update.


UltraLite-mk4

(updating with internet connection)
  1. Launch the MOTU Pro Audio Control web app on your computer, as usual.
  2. Go to the Device tab.
  3. In the New Update Available banner, click More Info.
  4. After reviewing the list of enhancements, click OK to start the update.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions.
(updating without internet connection)
  1. Download the latest firmware file from Firmware Change Log.
  2. Transfer the file to the computer connected to the UltraLite-mk4.
  3. Launch the MOTU Pro Audio Control web app on the computer, as usual.
  4. Go to the Device tab.
  5. Scroll down to the bottom and click Update from File.
  6. Locate the file on your hard drive and click OK to start the update.
  7. Follow the on-screen instructions.


828x, 828mk3 Hybrid, 896mk3 Hybrid, UltraLite mk3 Hybrid

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Disconnect the FireWire (or ThunderBolt) cable from back panel if it is connected.
  3. Connect the device to the computer via USB.
  4. Press and hold the Page knob on the front panel and turn on the device.
  5. Release the Page knob when the bootloader version number appears on the LCD.
  6. Open the firmware updater program and follow the on-screen instructions to install the update.


828mk3, 896mk3, Traveler mk3, UltraLite mk3

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Connect the device to the computer via FireWire.
  3. Press and hold the Page knob on the front panel and turn on the device.
  4. Release the Page knob when the bootloader version number appears on the LCD.
  5. Open the firmware updater program and follow the on-screen instructions to install the update.


8pre FireWire

  1. Connect the 8pre to the computer and turn it on.
  2. Open the firmware updater program and follow the on-screen instructions to install the update.


UltraLite

  1. Turn off the UltraLite.
  2. Connect the UltraLite to the computer via FireWire.
  3. Press and hold the Page knob and the Cursor knob on the front panel, and turn on the device.
  4. Release the Page and Cursor knobs when the words Firmware Upgrade appear on the LCD.
  5. Open the firmware updater program and follow the on-screen instructions to install the update.


Traveler

  1. Turn off the Traveler.
  2. Connect the Traveler to the computer via FireWire.
  3. Press and hold the Cursor knob on the front panel and turn on the device.
  4. Release the Cursor knob when the words Firmware Upgrade appear on the LCD.
  5. Open the firmware updater program and follow the on-screen instructions to install the update.


V3HD, V4HD

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Disconnect the FireWire cables from back panel if they are connected.
  3. Connect the device to the computer via USB.
  4. Press and hold the Value knob on the front panel and turn on the device.
  5. Release the Value knob when the bootloader version number appears on the LCD.
  6. Open the firmware updater program and follow the on-screen instructions to install the update.


HD-Express, HDX-SDI

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Turn it back on while depressing the PHONES volume knob.
  3. Restart the computer.
  4. Run the MOTU Video Setup application and follow the on-screen instructions to install the update.
  5. Upon completion of firmware update, turn off the device and turn it back on.
  6. Restart the computer.
